Have You Ever Wondered...
How did the name Yellowstone
originate?
The name Yellowstone came
from the Native American Minnetaree ( Mi Tsi a-da-zi ) Indian tribes who lived
in and around the park area.
They called the area "Mi Tsi
a-da-zi," meaning "Rock Yellow River” which was chosen from the yellow rock
cliffs found along the banks of the Yellowstone River.
Later the name was translated as
Yellow rock, or Yellow stone from its French name, Roche jaune by the French
fur Trappers.
Yellowstone National Park
became the world's first national park.
