Blanket -
A blanket is usually a square or rectangular shaped piece of cloth, generally
intended to keep people warm, especially while they sleep. It can be
distinguished from sheets by its thickness and its intention; the thickest
sheet is still thinner than the lightest blanket, because blankets intend to
warm people, while sheets are for hygiene, comfort and aesthetics.
Blankets come in many varieties and are made from many different
materials. Some examples would be bedding blankets, throw blankets, fleece
blankets, cotton blankets and acrylic blankets.
Biederlack of America - Biederlack
of America was one of the largest manufacturers of Jacquard woven high pile blankets and
throw blankets in the United States. With more than a century's worth of
experience they created quality Jacquard Woven throws and Fleece blankets with
the finest materials, cutting-edge technology and constant attention to every
detail. You can always take comfort in a Biederlack Blanket! Sadly, Biederlack has now closed.
Cotton - A
soft fiber obtained from the seed pod of a cotton plant. It
is spun into yarn and thread and woven into fabric, often used in bedding blankets.
Egyptian Cotton - Egyptian Cotton is regarded as the finest cotton in the world. A fine, extra-long, lustrous staple cotton grown in Egypt. Longer staple fibers produce a softer, higher luster fabric. The consumer identifies Egyptian Cotton with quality.
Fiber - Natural or man-made units
of matter which can be spun into a yarn or made into a fabric by various
methods. The essential properties of fibers to be spun into yarn include a
length of at least 5 millimeters, flexibility, co-hesiveness, and
sufficient strength. Other important properties include elasticity, fineness,
uniformity, durability, and luster.
Fleece - A soft, bulky, deep-piled, knitted or woven fabric. Everyone enjoys a fleece blanket because fleece blankets are extremely soft to the touch and comfortably warm.
Herringbone - A pattern consisting of columns or rows of short
slanted parallel lines with all the lines in one column sloping one way and
all the lines in the adjacent columns sloping the other way; (similar to a
zigzag effect). It is often used in weaving, masonry (commonly found in patios, or
brick walkways), parquetry (flooring) and embroidery stitch patterns.
Jacquard - A weaving process
invented by Joseph Jacquard in 1801 allowing complex and complicated patterns
to be woven. A jacquard woven blanket/throw pattern is woven right into the product and will not wash off, wear down or fade away. Today it is one of the most widely used processes in the world to
produce many fabrics. The Jacquard process allows for a textured finish, with
the ability to use varying types of patterns and yarns in the same piece for the
layered, dimensional effect used in some bedding or blanket throws. These qualities are what make Jacquard Woven
blankets so desirable to touch and fun to own.
Mercerized Cotton - Mercerization
is a treatment for cotton fabric and thread employed to give cotton a more
lustrous appearance and greater strength. The fibers then take dye better with
brighter, deeper colors and do not shrink as much when washed as unmercerized
cotton does. Mercerized cotton blankets also are more resistant to mildew and
also more resistant to lint.
Long staple fiber lengths respond best to
mercerization. The series of processes was devised by John Mercer (scientist)
in the middle of the 19th century.
Microfiber - Microfibers are
man-made ultra fine fibers available in acrylic, nylon, polyester, and rayon.
When woven they produce an extremely drapeable, very soft and luxurious
fabric. Our micro fiber blankets are made of a polyester / acrylic blend.
Orion -A cotton, polyester and acrylic micro fiber Fleece Blend, exclusively developed by Biederlack of America for a consistent finish, adjusted nap for the best design, clarity and blanket coverage, all resulting in a softer hand.
Pile - The upright ends of
yarn, whether cut or looped that form the weaving surface of the material.
Sometimes called the face or nap. Many Biederlack blankets, and throw
blankets are high pile blankets which give them an extra soft almost "furry
feel."
Plush - A fabric of silk, rayon, cotton, or other material with an even thick, deep pile, longer, softer and less dense than velvet pile. Luxurious.
Polyester -
A synthetic fiber used for its strength and resistance to ultraviolet
deterioration. It does not have the stretch and elasticity of nylon and, as a
result, will often last longer. Biederlack blankets are made of a micro fiber
acrylic polyester blend.
Polyester Fiber Characteristics

blanket is not only used for decorative purposes but for convenience as well.
Stadium blankets and picnic blankets are just a couple examples of throws.
Upland Cotton -A tropical American plant (Gossypium hirsutum) widely cultivated for the woolly lint that surrounds its seeds. Upland Cotton is the most common type of Cotton produced in the U.S. and can be found in the Southeast United States westward to California. The 14 major cotton growing states that produce Upland cotton are, in alphabetical order: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Some cotton is also grown in Florida, Kansas and New Mexico.
Woven - A fabric composed
of two sets of yarns and formed by weaving, which is the interlacing
